From moped to sportsbike.

Personal

If I’m just popping to the market or to a local friends house, I’ll usually take the Honda Dream (100cc automatic moped). Sometimes I’ll use it to go even further, if it saves me getting the sports bike out. But, if I’ve got some serious distance to cover, I have to get the CBR400 out. Unfortunately, at the moment, it’s got a flat tyre, so I’m not going anywhere very quickly.

The same can be said of my work equipment. I’ve managed to get by for nearly a year now, doing serious development work on a cheap Celeron-based laptop. I’ve been able to get about and get my work done, but whatever I do takes time. I just have to smile and try to enjoy the ride until the job is complete.

However, I am finally in a position whereby I can purchase a more suitable tool for my job. My ambition is to be to get my work done every day within 8hrs, rather than 16 due to having to wait for things to happen and not being able to multitask seriously while they are. I doubt I’ll be able to double my working pace simply by buying a faster computer - I am still missing a fast internet connection and some better organised work scheduling and accounting procedures, but they are coming along slowly.

So, tomorrow afternoon, I go to Bangkok to buy a new computer that should hopefully see me working more swiftly and comfortably. I will also be visitting a few friends in the open source arena to discuss ideas and the possibility of perhaps hosting a Asia-Pacific GUADEC-style conference in Bangkok. I come back on Monday with a spangly new machine to play^Wwork with.
